Thanks for all the help and advice. XJ no more.

My XJ almost killed me about a month ago when the brakes totally failed. Both circuits burst thru rusty lines at the same time. I was doing about 40mph down a busy street and a gasoline tanker was pulling in front of me to get into a gas station to unload. Luckily, he saw me and stopped...

00 XJ running terribly with lots of codes.

Yes. Compression test. Never can understand why everyone wants to ignore the simple cheap diagnostic and just start changing parts.

Life expectancy vs Investment - help me out please

I, for one, am glad that Matthew Currie sneaks onto the forum. Always great advice.

Internal cooling circuit bursted in stock Rad.

Go with #2 and make sure trans survived. If it did, either replace radiator or add external cooler.

    2001 4.0 to 1991 XJ? help me!

x2. Doesn't take abuse to have a cracked 0331 head.

    Valve contact with pistons

Profile says 2001 so no renix. Always give year in post as well as engine/trans combination. If knocking goes away on mid-grade, you obviously have pre-ignition. Possible causes: bad gas, too high compression from carbon build up, too much spark advance (which is basically not adjustable with...

    ROCK AUTO 4.0 MOTORS

But obviously you don't want a 2000-2001 motor with the infamous 0331 head.

    Blower Motor Woes

Blower motor resistor is one part (under dash), blower speed selector switch is another (in dash).

axle seal replacement question about bearing races.

I definitely agree with this concept in general. Prove it bad before you replace it with some unknown Chinese made part. BUT....every time I've had an axle seal leak, the bearing WAS bad. Usually the axle too. Check them closely.

Too late for you, but for others, safe practice is to jump with your vehicle not running.

New (to me) 2001 Cherokee Sport

#1 Research 0331 cracked head syndrome and be on lookout for that. Using coolant. Mayonnaise on the oil fill cap. #2 Change all fluids including brake fluid, power steering fluid, differentials, transfer case, transmission, coolant, engine oil. I'm pretty sure there is a fuel filter...

I'm thinking to get the one that you can start with your phone! May as well. Distance and walls have been an issue in the past.

    Weird Heater Motor Problem

X2. Resister needs to have good airflow over it to survive. Just because it is new, doesn't mean it is good. HOPEFULLY it is good. Feel the other components like the switch and plugs for heat buildup which would show excessive resistance.

    Heater issue...

I'd pull the plug off the switch and try jumping between the sockets. If you can make the various speeds work that way, it IS the switch.

    Oops... crank, no start.

Spark plugs could be fouled by now too. Pull at least one out and take a look. If wet, pull them all out and clean plugs with starter fluid. Crank the motor a little to blow out any excess fuel.

    1990 xj fuel pump problem

Bad pump. A short anywhere couldn't hurt the pump. Too bad you didn't get a Bosch pump.

4.0 hard to start when cold

Bad temperature sensor would not tell the PCM to richen the mixture for start. Like no choke on a carbureted motor.

a couple of motor rebuild questions. ...

Making sure your torque wrench is good is important too. I run a Quality Control lab and we have many wrenches brought in that do not calibrate well. I had some old school "beam" type wrenches that I thought would be have to be good. No moving parts, etc.. Turns out that I have to go 10-15...
