FYI--a question was recently asked, "Is it against the rules to make a new account?"--Yes, it is.
You can request a name change on your account, but multiple accounts for an individual are not allowed.
The axle, other than having the low pinion which can drag on rocks, really isn't a problem--just a D30 of a different "color".
You could swap the front axle out if you want, depending on how hard and what type of wheeling you do.
If memory serves, the 00-01 can be a little fussy with...
RENIX--Renault/Bendix XJs are 1987-1990.
Cherokee XJ years of production--1984 to 2001.
Bast*rd year--1996.
Can a well-cared for XJ last more than 300k miles? YES. Are there many (any) "well-cared for" XJs out there? NO.

If it passes, then hook it back up and use a voltmeter to measure static, engine off, voltage between the posts--looking for about 12.5 volts.
Next, start the engine and...
Dexron transmission fluid--PINK.
Golden/brownish are not options.
I would change the fluid, do a poor man's flush BEFORE pulling the transmission.
Remember--the fluid provides the energy transfer from the engine to the transmission. Bad fluid, poor energy transfer.
