The Speedometer just started fluctuating when I get above 20 MPH on my 97 xj (Automatic) 135k miles. Before I just drop $130 on a new VSS does anybody have any other ideas or things I should check? All the other guages are working fine. Appreciate any help here.:huh:

Yes, checked all the resistances for the switches at the ECM connector before I gave up and took it to the dealer for them to look at. Everything appeared correct. I would assume that's why the dealer is telling me its the ECM.

Checked the vacuum lines, no leaks. The cruise light doesn't even light up most of the time when I try to engage it. It keeps giving the code 34 which could be many different things

We'll I took out the Tcase and the shop that did the rebuild forgot to put the snap ring that goes on input shaft behind the input seal back in. Works now, amasing ahow a $2 snap ring can mess up your day!:doh:

I The case I found is out of a 94, but it already has a SYE installed. Mine is a 97 with SYE. I think it will bolt right up. Anything I'm missing?

Both are from a AW4 with 4.0, so i would assume the splinne count would be the same.

Does anyone know what the difference between an np231 from a 94 and a 97? Looking at them the drain plugs look differenent, but will it bolt right up? What about the speedometer output?

Tried that, it's definatley in the case.

It engages, but slips out if coasting with no load or under engine braking. I looked at some diagrams, what if the input gear pilot bushing were damaged or missing? Whould that cause this knid of symptom?

I took off the tailshaft housing and the shaft sticks out about 3/4 inch in low gear. The depth of the hole in the tail shaft is 1 1/4, so I don't think it is the shaft. Could something been assembled incorrectly either on the input shaft, or the shaft with the forks on it? With the linkage...
