    rebuilding t-case (231)

I bought a kit from National Drivetrain. The kit was okay, but DID NOT include any seals. This turned out to be a pain in the butt. I got some from NAPA and some from Mopar. I rebuilt the case with the parts and it was a bit of a pain. In hind site I suggest you call Mopar and get a reman...

    t-case rebuild...web site

Is there a web site that shows how to rebuild a 231 t-case? When I put my disc brakes on my d-44 there were a couple sites that were a huge help. Was hoping for the same for this job. Thanks, Curt

    metal in t-case fluid

I already knew my t-case was messed up, but my fluid looks like mercury. I ordered a rebuild kit and chain as Bezil suggested in a different thread, but wanted to know if this t-case is going to be trash, now that I saw the fluid? I know the chain is hitting on the side of the case as well...

    231 question

Okay, I ordered the master kit and chain from Kevin and told him you sent me as you suggested. I can get another used t-case if I get in there and the thing is totally trashed and put the new parts in it. Thanks for the replies on all this. Hope I can use my current t-case, but I guess I...

    231 question

I have a '96 5sp XJ and the 231 J is going to go very soon. I looked into rebuilding it and it seems like that is going to cost almost $1000 in parts. A rebuilt one is a pile of $$ as well. I was thinking of going to a bone yard and getting one. Found one for $350. Is this a good idea...

    t-case rebuild kit?

What is the best option on doing a rebuild for 231? I don't have a core due to me using a hack and tap. Anyone making a kit? Any other options? I think my chain is stretched and if I am getting in there I might as well replace wearable parts, got 150 miles on her. Thanks, Curt

    transfer case noise

Thanks for the information. I guess it is time to pull the t-case like you said. Rather do that than deal with the tranny. Thanks again, Curt

    transfer case noise

My trainsfer case is making a noise. Here is the story. I have a '96 XJ 5sp w/4.10's and 33's. I have been driving lots of highway miles and noticed there is a noise comming from my t-case. At first I thought it was the tranny, but got under it while jacked up and realize it is the t-case...

    44 direct swap in?

Actually, the U bolts are a little small for the 44, or atleast mine were, but they work. Mine needed a little coaxing to get on. They were new when I put the lift on. No big deal though, they work fine. Very little difference. Curt

    44 direct swap in?

You have a d35custom, just like I had. I now have a '87 d44 in mine, just like you want to do. It will bolt in. It has a little higher perch's, so it will sit a little higher in the rear. I didn't have to change my shaft, but I have a CV driveshaft with my lift. I was told I needed to...

    Which Shocks??

I liked my Trailmaster SSV's a bit better than OME's for my 4" lift. I also wasn't too impressed with OME's set up. They had no bar pins and then they sent me the wrong ones, so I just ended up putting on bar pin eliminators from JKS. A lot of hassle for a set of shocks. They are fine now...

    Shock recomendation

I really like my Trailmaster SSV's for my 4" lift. They lasted 100K miles. Great ride and never a problem. Not sure why they are not more popular. I have OME's shocks on my 5.5 lift and they are pretty good. Can't complain, but I really liked the SSV's. Curt

What do you put in your rear(end)?

I just installed a d44 in mine and put good gear oil in and plan on running it for 50K miles just like the factory did when I bought the XJ new. Not sure why people are going crazy over these rear ends? Never changed the gear oil after a few hundred on my last rear and it was fine after over...

Dana 44 rear brakes, where to get everything?

Just to let you know, disc brakes were a little cheaper than rebuilding my drums for my d44. I found a '96 ZJ set of rear discs for $125 and rotors and pads. It was pretty easy really. I priced drums, but the backing plates and so on were pretty expensive. Just a thought, Curt

    Street PSI

I found running 28 pounds was good wear after over 70K worth of miles on 31's for the street. I ran more and found I was wearing the center of the tire too much. My XJ has no after market bumpers or anything, so it is pretty much stock weight. I run 31 pounds with my 33's now and find they...

    Lifting a DD...

If you are close to Pittsburgh, you can buy my 4" Trailmaster lift. Here is a picture of it with 31's. I went up to a RE 5.5. Curt
