    94 xj rear axle alignment

I believe that that is the correct bolt. However, I just went to the local spring shop and told them that I need a center pin for a XJ. Got the perfect fit, along with custom length u-bolts for my new bastard pack. Only cost about $20

    Huge MPG drop!

I'm going to join in here. 91 XJ, 4.0 L, AW4, 3.55 gears with 235/75R15 Goodyears AT/Ds. 198k miles. This Jeep hasn't been run all that much recently, as I get to bring the flatbed home with me every night. When I bought it (30 k miles ago), I put in a new distributor/cap/rotor/plugs, 2...

What kind of "deals" did you get for your XJ?

$500 for my 91 XJ. Rear main, dizzy, and oil change, and it ran like a champ. Blew the rad out rescuing a CJ once....my 20 MPG+ DD, with 196,xxx miles $1200 for my wife's 95 ZJ with 235,xxx miles. Bad front pinion, bad 249 t-case as the result of 3 different size tires on full-time 4wd...

    howling in 4wd

Checked the u-joints and play in the bearings (both t-case and axle side). There doesn't seem to be any up-down or left-right slop anywhere. However, I did notice that the front driveshaft has about 45* of rotation before catching, and the rear has only about 10*. Is that normal, or a sign...

Help! Took it muddin'----> now Hesitation/Stumbling on Accel

check that number 6 plug wire. A clicking noise can sometimes be a plug wire arcing to ground....If you leave the motor run in a dark garage, you can often see the blue flashes.

    howling in 4wd

My 91 XJ has picked up a howling noise when in 4hi. I need to adjust the linkage on the t-case, as it won't stay fully engaged into 4lo. The noise gets really loud about 10-15 mph. However, it doesn't seem to make any noise while on the highway in 2wd. Is this a sign of a t-case needing...

    Time for AW4 re-build??

mid brown? That's not a real good sign...transmission fluid is supposed to be red. Any darker, and it's a sign of dirty fluid, burned clutches, etc.... I just used this stuff for the first time yesterday in the wife's ZJ, but I'm hearing awesome things about the Lucas Transmission Fix...

    drivetrain noise

I'm going to say that yes, the transfer case was almost empty. I filled it up till the fluid came pouring back out of the upper plug, correct? Did some checking tonight. The faster you go, the louder the noise gets. It seems to get quieter while accelerating, stays constant when cruising...

    drivetrain noise

91 XJ, AW4, 231 t-case I've got a noise coming from under my Jeep, sounds like it's coming from the area of the e-brake handle. It's very faint, can only be heard when driving with radio and heater off. This sounds almost like a bad bearing growl, but under water. I checked the t-case, and...

    Intake/Exhaust manifold swap ?

Running a 91 XJ as my DD, the first full year of the HO motor. I've got the usual cracked exhaust manifold, complete with exhaust fumes being sucked into the cabin (especially when sitting at stoplights) I pulled the motor out of a 97 ZJ (the parts car for the wife), and thought that I could...

ZJ seats are too cramped in my XJ!!

I've found that seats from an early XJ (86-ish) have the same base as the early 90's XJs. They also have this cool rocking feature built into the base....I transplanted those into both my 89 and my 91.

    front recovery points

just to make sure that we're all talking about the same thing.....you guys are referring to http://4by4connection.com/drings.html as shackles....not the one-piece d-rings?

    front recovery points

I'm gonig to build some front recovery points for my stocker, and it's come time for the age-old question.....should I build shackles or tow hooks? Planning on going with a OEM style bracket for now, but later going to custom build a bumper with tow points extended out to the face of the...

renix--long crank time, stumbling/misfires when cold

#1 plug looks just the same as the others. some brown on the electrode, and some oily residue high on the threads that smells strongly of fuel. Trying to ldo this without pulling the head off, due to time and money constraints. Due to the wonderful economy here in NE Indiana, my house...

    crossmember gas

You don't need to start/run the vehicle. Put on some safety glasses, jack up the the Jeep, and crawl under the passenger side. Have someone turn the ignition on, the fuel pump will prime. If the lines are leaking, this should cause them to leak/spray. Just make sure you don't get gas...

renix--long crank time, stumbling/misfires when cold

Well, the results are in. Compression tests came out mostly excellent. Cylinders 2, 3, 4, 6 are looking at 120 PSI of compression, +/- 10. Cylinder #5 has about 95 PSI, but cylinder #1 has only 58 PSI. Spark plugs are in good shape after about 1700 miles, they are slightly brown, with...

renix--long crank time, stumbling/misfires when cold

OK. I did a coolant pressure test, trying to see if I would get any coolant accumulating in the cylinders. All I found was that the thermostat housing was leaking..... I was curious, what's the spec for compression on a stock 90 4.0? Compression testing being done now....

renix--long crank time, stumbling/misfires when cold

There were some overheating problems, that's actually how I got it so cheap. I have not changed fuel filter, but will def. investigate compression and fuel pressure numbers. A friend also proposed a warped intake manifold or bad intake manifold gasket? The theory there was that it was...

renix--long crank time, stumbling/misfires when cold

OK, 1990 XJ. 4.0/AW4/etc... I recently bought a 1990 XJ. Picked it up because it had a "unfixable" overheating problem. Turned out to be a simple cap on the coolant bottle. I replaced the bottle, then heater core, heater hoses, thermostat, and finally a full conversion to a open...

a junkyard miracle! questions about 4.0 swap into 2.5 body

I found a nearly completely rust-free XJ in the local JY. The only problem I see is that this is a 86 XJ, with the 2.5L, and comparable tranny/TC. I'm wondering if it is going to be worthwhile to swap in my engine/tranny/TC (1990 4.0/AW4/235), or should I just save the rust-free fenders and...
