why the #^*$ do they leave out 18mm???

I've run into this before but always managed to work around it. 18mm is a very commonly needed metric size, right after 15mm and 13mm. Why is it left out of sets so often? I have at least 2 metric combo sets, no 18mm. My deep well impact set left out 18mm. At least my regular socket set...

What do yall think of the Medford, OR area?

Just had a phone interview with a company in Central Point, and it seemed to go well. The wife and I have talked about moving to the Pacific Northwest for a few years now, and this may be our chance. What do yall think of this area? Would you want to live there? Anything in particular to...

    Hydraulic Assist

What're yalls take on hydraulic assist for the high-speed stuff? Haven't seen it mentioned in this section, but when talking about rocks it seems that one of the big advantages is reduced stress on the steering parts and frame. Seems like it might be a great thing when going fast, even if tire...

    Motor mounts from stock shackles

99 xj, 205k or so. Removed mechanical fan and put in a 2nd electric, but the motor moved enough to push into the fan. My wheeling budget is small and I'm just learning to weld/fab, so I thought I'd save $85 and fab my own. Just put on lift shackles and the stock shackles looked like a perfect...

NAXJA XJs in Four Wheeler magazine- june 2012

Looking through the "Ex-Js" article in the june issue (p60). Cool, rough XJ/buggies. Looking at Hollingsworth's 98, he says his favorite mod is cutting brakes. But it says he has spools front and rear. Doesn't make sense to me, can someone explain?

PT Cruiser rear bump stops -Junkyard long-travel bumps?

OK, I know the title doesn't sound promising, but stay with me. I bought a wrecked 2005 PT cruiser to swap the engine into my daily beater, a 2004 neon. Crawled under it and spotted these: They look like the stock XJ front bumpstops, just much bigger. I just put in the prothane inserts...

    scangauge 2 question

I've used my scangauge for a couple of years now and it had been great. Clears codes and I'm sure I get better mpgs with it. But I have a dumb question: how do I make it show current trip mpg on the gauges display? I saw where someone had it set up this way but don't know how :dunno:. I...

    best replacement distributor

I just figured out that what I thought was a belt/bearing squeak is coming from the distributor. Looks like this is fairly common (XJ has 196k on it) and I should just replace it. Where should I get the replacement from? Does it matter? I'm too poor to fix it twice.

New GMB water pump going bad after 2 months

I installed a new GMB brand water pump that I bought from Advanced Auto a couple of months ago. My stock pump was fine, but the heater tube was rusted and leaking, and since the Jeep has 190k on it I figured I'd chance the pump while I had it off. For the past few weeks I ocationally hear...

Steering is worn out - Stock/V8ZJ vs. IRO

At 191k miles, it looks like my steering is worn out. I went to O'Reilly's website and priced out all new moog parts, and it came to $351. With a v8zj tie rod it's $355. Iron Rock's setup w/ the 5/8 upgrade is only $370. This is my daily driver, but I'm leaning towards the IRO setup (I have...

Big bump, loud POP, steering wheel off center. What to check?

So I was pulling out of the driveway at work, which has a large bump and then dip at the street, and it hit it bit harder than prudent :firedevil. There was a loud pop, and it popped again 2 seconds later. We looked it over and couldn't find anything, and it rode and drove fine after that. On...

tire pressure for 31s- chalk test no good

So I have new 31x10.50 wrangler duratracs and 15x7 rims on a basically stock, 4.0 aw4 XJ. I just did the chalk test on the front tires only, and don't see any use in the results. I started at 30 psi, where the chalk rubbed off to about 1.5" from the edge, and worked my way down all the way to...

I drove through it yesterday, and harassed my partner-in-crime into trying it in his truck :gee:. We didn't think he'd make it, turns out we were right. here's the video. No sound, sorry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wziwBhaf51g

    New Shoes! Duratracs on lobos

Moved up to 31s! Goodyear Duratracs on Black Rock Lobos, 15x7 4.25 backspacing. I know, still small, but bigger than the 235s. Here's how you fit 5 unmounted tires and wheels in the back of an XJ with a 15" sub installed: Easy. Another reason IB rocks! I folded the pinch seam, then...

    proud of my boy

He's almost 6 and just finished his 3rd day of kindergarten. We were going over the "schoolwork" he brought home and came across a drawing that he did. He said, "That's Laguna Seca." I guess he has learned something from playing Gran Turismo 2 :D. I feel so proud :farmer:.

    Anyone good with outboards?

I've got my first: a 1979 Chrysler 70 horse. It doesn't run right, won't speed for more than about 30 seconds. I changed the water pump impeller, the old one looked like ass, and I added a tell-tale (pee hole). But running it in the driveway almost no water comes out of the tell tale. I get...

    1st time ball joint replacement

Just did it. PITA but glad it's done. Lower joints were shot. On the upper joints when I separated the knuckle the stud pulled out of the joint. Is that normal or a sign that the joints were trashed? Lessons learned: 1) Experience matters. 2nd side took half the time. 2) Forget removing...
