    Wiggle the PRNDL and see if it starts in neutral. Thats the neutral safety switch. The next thing to do is jump the starter at the starter. The round end of an adjustable wrench works well. A remote starter switch also works better...

    No 1st gear?

    Chances are its the 1-2 solenoid. BEFORE you do any part buying do the solenoid test. An ohm meter at the TCU which is located above the gas pedal. A easy search will give you procedure. It takes a couple hours to change out the solenoids. They are under the tran pans. IF that is the problem...

    I also use magnet mount lights on the roof. Ive towed over 10K miles all over the midwest. I would prefer wired into the stock lights but the motor home has standard tail/turn/brake lights unlike the XJ.

    Roar from rear diff

    It will probably be a carrier or pinion bearing that has worn out. This can not be seen with out taking it apart.
