Swapping a transmission isn't bad. Get an E12 inverted torx socket, and some 3' long extensions. I pull the t-case off first because it weights the whole assembly funky off to one side if you don't.

I think the 904's were 23 spline, "short" input, so a 242 with that, and a checkbook for druveshafts from your favorite vendor ought to do nicely.
