    Expedition Build: Yellow Jeep XJ

RC Long arms with Currie Johnny Joints here. Ride is soooooo much nicer than stock links (went directly from 4" springs and stock links to long arms).

    Tire chain advise

My jeep is running 31x10.50s and I've got a set of the traditional style chains that run across the tread. You want to make sure you've got the them as tight as possible and use at least three heavy duty bungee cords per wheel to keep everything in place (I prefer the thick black rubber type...

What did you do to your XJ today

It was yesterday, but replaced all the tierod ends and draglink with Moog parts and had a new rear driveshaft built. The steering was starting to get a little vague and the slip joint was completely shot. The ol' Jeep rides like a new rig now. Well, a lot closer than it did before anyway!

Do you really use your Hi-Lift?

I've used mine to change a few flat tires and rock the jeep out of a few holes but the above incident was probably the most interesting. On a survey job along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, my friend drove our rented RV through some bushes at the campground at Galbreth Lake north of Atigun Pass and...

Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Here's some 'before' pictures of the new prothanes. We'll see how they hold up. Since I'm dragging about 1000lbs of cargo between the jeep and the trailer that's just about ride height in the rear for the trip. Empty there's about three inches of uptravel before hitting the bump. Front uptravel...

Wilco. From what I hear, they're poor-man's airbumps. I will be performing an extensive 4000+ mile road test over the next couple of weeks, though.

Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I was going to say that! Let's see, I repaired one of the cracks in my 'frame-rail' (stop-drilled, cleaned, beveled, then welded the crack and welded on a small piece of 18ga for reinforcement; the other crack is behind the gas tank that I didn't feel like dropping), installed a set of...

Weekend is over...what did you get done?

After the UPS man dropped off a set of Johnny Joints for the Rough Country long arms I snagged off craigslist last week I got most of the aforementioned kit installed. I couldn't find the right drill bits to put on the cross member side brackets, though, so Ive left those off for now...

Weekend is over...what did you get done?

That might be a little too short notice! I'm actually going flying tuesday. Among other things (like camping, wheeling, and wrenching on the jeep), I'm trying to finish my private pilot's license and work on my instrument rating and commercial ticket while this 3 on/3 off job lasts.

Weekend is over...what did you get done?

Since the last time I was on here, I've installed some second hand deavers in the rear and a set of HD Engineering shackle relocation brackets. Huge increase in both on and offroad ride quality, but now my pinion angle is a little bit off. I'll probably yank the axle out and weld on another...

    boomeranging shackles

I agree that done properly, modifying my current shackles would result in no loss of strength or appearance. What I'm considering to be the best solution for me is relocation brackets. Not only will I solve the shackle to body clearance issue, brackets will greatly reinforce the shackle...

    boomeranging shackles

Hack may have been a little strong of a term in this case. Modifying my current shackles would surely work, its just not the best solution.

    boomeranging shackles

Yeah, ixnay on the shackle hacking. I can't have my rig showing up on the ghetto fab thread on pirate! After a little research I've decided to go with some of these. Mostly because it'll tie the shackle mounts directly into the 'frame rail' inserts from my fancy homemade bumper. Should make...

    boomeranging shackles

So I picked up a set of second hand prerunner deavers but find that my teraflex shackles are hitting the back of the box on the body under compression. The obvious solution is a set of boomerang shackles, but is there any good reason I can't modify my current straight shackles for extra...
