    Thanks Tom, that helps.

    1996 XJ NSS Temporary Bypass

It's an automatic. Should have mentioned that. I have seen threads on bypassing the nss but I`m not sure if the information will work for the 96 xj. Not sure if I`m looking for a plug with four wires or six, and which two wires I need to join.

    1996 XJ NSS Temporary Bypass

I've looked at all (well, most all) of the NSS threads and I'm pretty sure that's the problem on my 96. Backup lights work, won't start in neutral, most of the time starts ok, but when it doesn't, wiggling the shifter while holding the key on will start it. Started up fine a few minutes ago with...

    Harmonic Balancer Question

I've used wix filters and Castrol 10w30 high mileage since I've owned it, changed every 3000 miles. I'm getting the rubber hose out today and see if I can't narrow down the location of the noise a little closer. Don't think it's the ac, and I replaced the fan clutch last summer.

    Harmonic Balancer Question

Well, I had it replaced at a shop (165.00). Didn't cure the knocking noise but I guess it needed to be done anyway. I will check the timing cover bolts if I can get to them. I guess it's probably something internal though. Doesn't knock until it's warmed up. It's a shame, because it's running...

    Harmonic Balancer Question

Thanks. It'll probably be a week or two before I can get it done but I'll post the results here as far as the noise.

    Harmonic Balancer Question

Ok, thanks. I need to take a closer look at that tomorrow. I'm sure it needs replacement since it is wobbling. Just hoping that might cure the noise as well.

    Harmonic Balancer Question

1996 XJ, 2WD, Auto Trans, 4.0, 203,000 miles. I have been trying to track down a knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine. I don't hear it when it's cold but after a minute or two I can . At idle it's kind of intermittent, but when I accelerate, the noise does...

    Fan Clutch check

Fixed. Put in a Stant 195 degree t-stat and new hoses. Took it for a drive and the hottest it got was 207. The fan clutch didn't hurt though. I don't know how old the one that was on there was. Thanks again for all the help.

    Fan Clutch check

I can do that. Do you know of any good way to check the water pump? It's not leaking or making any noise. I'm wondering if the impeller blades are rotted off of it. Anyway, thanks for the help. I guess now I'm into the "general overheating problems" territory.

    Fan Clutch check

Thanks Grimm I'll check those. If 210 is normal, and I realize that's what I'm shooting for, what would you call too hot? That might be a bad question as in, what's not too hot for one jeep might be way too hot for another? Edit- Just checked. Couldn't tell much about the radiator because it's...

    Fan Clutch check

Well, it doesn't look like it's any better. I replaced the clutch and drove around the neighborhood for a few minutes and it read between 223 - 226, with a high of 232. Air temp outside is about 85. The electric fan came on pretty quickly. I was hoping for a temp in about the 210 range. What...

    Fan Clutch check

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. I went and bought one. I'll let you know. Could be more than one thing but I think the fan clutch definitely needs replacing.

    Fan Clutch check

I searched but I can't find. I forget, how do you tell if a fan clutch is bad. My 96 xj is running hot (228-235). When I got home I spun the fan by hand and it spun pretty easily. I can't remember if it was supposed to spin easily when hot or cold. Had a new water pump about 2 years ago and...

    Oil leak?

This must be it. Can't imagine what it would have been. I spent some time under the front end and can't find anything leaky. There was just so much of it. Thanks
