you're talking the transmission gears grinding right? the clutch works normally?
try replacing the transmission oil. I had pretty good luck with mobil 1 10w30 engine oil. you DO NOT want to use gear oil in that gear box I forget the exact specs, but the recommended gear oil contains sulphur...
try cleaning your idle air controller and throttle body. it might be so gunked up that it needed the extra air from the main throttle to run. also the IAC might be sticking.
Ok, obviously the 96 has a different style slip yoke. I have a 94 trans case. as I noted in the other thread I was considering switching to the old style ATF lubed splines anyway, so if that's my only option I'll get the old style driveshaft...
question though- can i just bolt the tail...
could be a good excuse to make a stroker... the 4.2 crank fits that block, and I think that nets you around 4.6 liters.
that said, I bet that engine will run awhile longer once you clean it all up.
cheap, reliable, solid I6 power, all weather, room for stuff and people.
I came from the toyota side of 4x4's.... I gotta say, the jeep is an all around better vehicle. The 4.0 KILLS the 22RE in every category.... power obviously and reliability. the 22RE has timing chain and head gasket...
what if you give it a little gas. I was running a crappy battery in my 96 xj for a little while, and i noticed the idle air control servo gets a little shy when you're running low voltage. I found that giving it some gas until it started to warm up/get the voltage up to normal and it would...

it is a weird conglomeration, but the XJ really got some top choice parts out of the deal.
