I swapped a my 231 for a 242 in my '00 XJ and the old linkage worked just fine. The old shift gate lets me go through all the ranges on the 242 without problems. The driveshaft is the same length.

Hi all, Does anybody know what the difference is between the 88-98 and the 99+ 4.0 starter is? My starter went in my 2k XJ and the ones listed for 99+ are significantly more expensive than the ones listed for 88-98. I thought any year 4.0 starter would fit. WTF thanks for any help

Sudden massive oil loss was what did it in. Probably the result of an accident it was in where some clueless lady ran a stop sign and plowed into the passenger side front wheel smacking the uca axle mounts into the oil pan disturbing the the seal. It went 60000 miles before the seal blew at 130k.

Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up making a deal for that '94 engine. I traded a couple of parts trucks and $125 for it. I just got it and I'm going out to take measurements to make sure the motor mounts will line up. I'm also going to check if the accessories and brackets will swap...

IMHO just go with a v8 ZJ tie rod They are a 1" dia. solid bar instead of a hollow tube and use a larger tre (the same one that connects the draglink to the pitman arm). They are at least as strong as aftermarket if not stronger and can be bought in any parts store.

you have to redrill the caliper bracket to match the XJ 44's axle flange bolt pattern. 90s Ford Crown Vic rear discs are a direct swap to an XJ 44.

Since this has little to do with his actual question I'll answer for him. I have a '94 w/a 242 and a 2000 w/a 231 and am swapping in a 242 from a ZJ into it. When the weather gets bad be it snow/ice or heavy rain I would rather be driving my '94 hands down. If you live in the north east IMHO...

The XJ is an AMC design not DCX. There are many benifits to uniframe (stiffness, saves weight, etc) The search function is your friend there has been a LOT of talk about this topic.

Make sure to bring your own jar of vaseline to the dealership if you go this route as an oem cat will cost a few hundred bucks. You can't beat $50 shipped for a Car Sound/Magnaflow from ebay + $8 for a peice of 2.25" exhaust pipe to make it "direct fit".
