Death wobble nightmare-I need some advice

Check your hub unit bearings, axle U-joints and ball joints too.

    Getting ready to change universals

I've found that when I get a new XJ it's worth it to change all universals, ball joints, control arms, steering tie rod ends and the track bar. It's a bit of cash up front, but once you've got it all apart it goes pretty easily. Last one I went over had 92K on it, I drove it without issues to...

99 Cherokee 3" or 3.25" rotors via vin number?

The other option is to replace hub bearings with a known year/dimension, and then match rotors. I'm working on a 2001 but put a 1996 front axle in it. Hubs and rotors are '96. If I sell it I'll need to put a manual with replacement parts in it.

    Parts source

I've been turning to Ebay for interior parts too.

Yet another death wobble help request

That list is pretty much what I am doing to my current XJ that I'm also converting from 2WD to 4WD. It's low miles (105K), the last one I had was a 97 that I ran from 92K to 220K, redid the front end as you described and it ran straight and smooth the whole time. Last time was a 2" budget...

I want to buy a Jeep

Keep an eye out on Craigslist, another one Iv’e been watching lately is Facebook marketplace, bought a nice clean 2001 low miles 2WD bad transmission one for cheap. It’s getting converted to 4wd.

    Wanted: Very clean original xj

I just picked up a 2001 2WD with a bad transmission for $1200. No big deal, it’s getting converted to 4wd, part of that includes a new(er) transmission. 106,000 miles, body is clean, no rust. Took me an hour to do the rear leafs last weekend, runs great. The deals are out there....

XJ won't start unless pushing shift knob

You might be able to start it in neutral if it absolutely won't start in Park.

    drive train noise.

Let me think this through - Driver side axle shaft is going wheel speed, passenger is disconnected. Carrier has spider gears, so yes, the spider gears will move and the carrier should be more or less stationary if the driveshaft is stationary and the vehicle is moving. Have you pulled the...

    drive train noise.

The carrier will spin, because the axle from the drivers side will turn it. The axles are supported by the carrier (bearings) on the inside, and the hub unit bearings on the outboard sides. The disconnect has a bearing on the inboard side supporting the axle going to the carrier, and a seal on...

    drive train noise.

Which case are you running? I saved my 242, just picked up a 2WD that I’m converting to 4wd. Got a transmission on the way and I found a 1996 high pinion D30 in the junkyard that I’m going to pull this weekend if it’s still there. My 242 had about 130,000 miles on it, I had just put a new...

    drive train noise.

I had a noise like that. I replaced all 7 u-joints, both unit bearings, had new carrier bearings & shaft seals installed on front & rear axles along with new pinion bearings, crush sleeves & seals and gear contact/lash set up, and replaced my np242 with a NOS unit. Still had the noise. Called...

    New XJ

I’ve not touched it since driving home Saturday. I work out of town and have been gone since Sunday afternoon. Plan of attack for the weekend is to check fluid, then disconnect TCM and try to drive it by shifting manually. Also hitting the junkyard to look at a donor for 4wd running gear...

Where to get rear spring shackles just 1-2" higher

I’ve used the rocky road shackles before, they give you 1-1/2” of lift, and they are beefy. Greaseable too. http://www.rocky-road.com/xj-shackles.html

    New XJ

It doesn’t show any codes, no CEL. I tried to manually select gears as it was driving, didn’t seem to make much difference. I also noted that once restarted, it would begin to slip after awhile in normal driving, and had issues going up the few hills we have in north Florida. Im leaning...
