Just got done dealing with this on my Jeep. Turned out to be a bum brake light switch.... The switch is removed from the mount by simply twisting it. Got a replacement at the dealer...set me back $32... but the fix was easy and all my brake lights work. Mike 00XJ

The reason the thing breaks is because the rubber grommets have turned to stone. I have a '00 and my grommets were as pliable as cement.... the only way the CCV was coming out was to cut out the petrified grommet. I needed to replace the valve cover gasket anyway, so I just bought new grommets...

This sounds like a two-bit answer to your problem but I would strongly suggest you get a factory service manual for your Jeep....and, for your electrical problem, an inexpensive VOM (volt/ohm meter) available at your parts store or Radio Shack. I just got done resurrecting my power windows...
