I think you have the wrong THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR on your xj. Renix models have a different TPS for the auto. It works backwards then the standard shift one. That explaines your getting OD when you mash it
I drove a 99.5 jetta tdi with abs for 114k miles and can count on one hand how many times they came on. And some when I was testing it. Also the wheel speed sensors might not like mud all over them.

You had the distributor out right? If so leave the clamp bolt out so you can turn it and have someone crank it while you rotate the distributor one way or the other. You're most likely one tooth off on the distributor. Been there, done that...

I would get a 99 with the good cylinder head. They changed heads in late 99 and all the 99's I looked at before buying mine almost a year ago had the better head.

He's right. I've had both a 93 VW Eurovan and a 96 XJ that had their cats brun u and rattle from running rich because of o2 sensors. Replacement cats come with a warning/statment that the original cat should not have gone bad and unless the cause is corrected the new one will fail also.

What year? As far back as at least a 96, they have a battery temperature sensor on the battery tray that contacts the bottom of the battery and sends a input to the engine computer that controls the charge rate. It is spring loaded to contact the bottom of the battery. Maybe it's lost it's...
