Try the abutment clips. I just put them on mine as part of a front brake job. If my memory serves, the instructions said to chose the ones that give you a minimum of .010 and a max of .015 clearance.

Your owner's specifies the amount and fill level for the diffs. I don't recall exactly what mine says, but I know it doesn't say add until it runs out the fill hole. It's more like 1/4" below the bottom of the hole. When I do mine I like to try and let it sit for a few hours in between checks...

This was my first thought as well. Try moving the shifter a little or putting it in neutral the next time it won't start.
