I just installed a RC 4.5 inch long arm kit on my 88 XJ and it was a breeze. Everything was included that you will need, and at a good price.

I highly recommend getting an extra set of bearings for both the carrier and the pinion and since you are a machinist it should be no problem for you to turn down the inside diameter of the bearings to snug but slide on fit. This way you won't have to keep pressing the bearings off and on while...
Guys, I am doing a SYE kit in my 231 and have it all back together but notice that when the transfer case is in neutral both output shafts are still locked together but are neutral, (spin freely) to the input shaft. I don't know if this is normal or not. Its a pretty straight forward install...
Thanks guys for the response. Gives me a direction to start. Now the hard part finding an AX15. The one I have now works just fine but I understand they are a weak, weak transmission.

I've got a 1988 XJ with the pueget 5sp (I think thats the spelling), I will be looking at changing it out in the future. What will swap in with limited modifications.
