don't worry about the peugeot BA10 5-speed tranny. It is junk, but was only available until 1989. This will most likely be an Aisin AX-15 if it is stock.
Try to talk him down on that price. Personally, I wouldn't spend more than ~2K even if it were in good mechanical and exterior condition...
dyno,
you're right they are the original pistons. I borrowed my bud's bore gauge and 4 inch mic today and actually measured the dimensions myself.
The guy I bought it from (original owner) said he babied it. The engine has the original amc stamped main and rod bearings, as well as amc...
no, none of my mics are large enough for the task. All that im looking for is if anyone knows if the '50' is a standardized crown marking which represents a .50mm oversize (.020"). I do know that in general, numbers that appear stamped on pistons sometimes have no dimensional meaning...
the motor is original to the car, and as far as I know, the 4.0L comes from the factory only with standard size pistons. The stamped markings on the block are indicative only of over/undersize cam and crank journals.
I'm currently in the process of reringing/honing my 88' 4.0L renix motor and have hit a problem. All my pistons were stamped '50' on the crown which led me to believe that this motor was once bored over to .020" (.50mm) So I purchased the .020" oversize rings and it turns out they are too large...
2000XJ 4.0L <60k miles: 55 cold idle, <5 hot idle,17psi highway, 20w50, purolator filter!
hope that makes some of you feel a little better!
check out my other post on this topic by searching for "low oil pressure" if you are plagued by this.
Eric
ive decided to drive the motor till it blows up! I simply don't have the time right now to be messing with this since my backup 88 xj's head gasket is now blown. I'm not going to put any money or time into it, so Ill deal with my 2000 when its on its last legs!! I Will definitely post results...
Creighton-
no, I havent got the motor out yet. I'm hoping to start on it this weekend, but we'll see. I'm just getting over a bad cold so I'm kind of weak at the moment. I will definetely post my results ASAP. By the way, are your lifters still noisy at idle with the heavier oil? What does your...
yeah looks like tomorrow night. I'd be real careful with that $400 motor; you might be right back to square one with not just one, but two motors! At the very least, make sure your getting a motor w/o a cracked head. As I said, ask to inspect underneath the valve cover. I cannot stress this...
you should have the 0630 heads in your XJ. I think only the ZJ's in 99 had the 0331 heads. Check the cast number. It is located on the driver's side top face of the head along the edge where the valve cover mates with the head.
Eric
well i filed a complaint with the NHTSA today on their website, and lo and behold, there were probably 10-15 other formal complaints filed there from other owners describing very similar problems. Although I doubt that it would help at all, i suggest anyone with these problems should file a...
jeepguy - my thoughts exactly; those cam bearings must be awfully bad to let 20w50 by (if it is infact the cam bearings, that is). I just hope the block is not cracked near one of the oil passages!
dirt - thanks for the info, that was one of the first things i tried. I actually ran the...
well it just so happens that the crack occurs directly under the oil filler cap, so to see if its there, you don't even have to remove the valve cover. Just remove the cap and shine a flashlite down there.
