Unless you love to rev it, IMO the 340 does not belong in an offroad vehicle. a Chryco 360 has a longer stroke than the 340/318/273 LA engines.
If I were to swap a v8, the a 340 block with 4.00" stroke crank give 408 ci with stock bore, 360 + .030 over is 406.

Old school logic on coolers = bigger is better
Factory piece is not huge but does make a diff. I would go aftermarket with more surface area if there was no factory unit.

I installed the Sensatracs on the XJ in May. 2000 miles later I am pretty happy with the ride but still believe the OME shocks or bilstein would have been better. (My budget did not allow OME)
My brother and friend use KYB on their stuff and love 'em but have no experience with them on an...

Well, not really a base model. My nicely equipt 98 Classic has NO ABS.... it does have the factory installed tow package (8.25" 29 spline, tranny cooler and wiring installed). None of the 97-99 XJ's I drove last spring had ABS.
That being said....I think a nice Sport or Classic would be easy...
I used Simple Green to clean the surface (works great on the white letters that everyone else hates) and then apply Turtle Wax Tire Wax. One coat lasts about a month. If you hit the second coat within the first month and then once a month after that makes for real easy clean up.
