I had the same problem with my jeep, upon closer inspection, the hinges had started sagging on one side and that's why it was not hitting the striker properly. I would have bought new hinges for it, but I sold it a week later to get a better jeep.
I had the exact same problem on my car, the retaining clip was broken on the plug for the TPS and it was backing out , interfering with the readings on the TPS. to fix it I pused it back all the way in, cleaned up the area, and used some duct tape to hold it in place.
have someone inspect your transfer case chain for streching NOW!!!
I had the same kind of situation and id not take care of it. the grinding sound was the chain jumping off the sprocket and sending tiny bits of shrapnel around until it eventually destroyed my transfer case to the tune of 1100 in...
