    brake issues...

it's the nature of the beast. every jeep i've owned has done this. i think the primary shoe (one facing front) is the shorter shoe on both sides. you might check that but i really don't think you can do anything about the "sticking" when raining. enjoy the ride.

    stuck in 4WD!

are you having trouble getting the lever to move into 2wd, or is the lever moving ok but its not shifting out of 4wd? a couple of times i have dug coins and such out of the shifter compartment on fellow xj'ers rigs that was preventing the shifter from moving freely. if your having trouble...

    Won't stay running

might sound simple but try cleaning the battery terminals. my 94 yj did this and the terminals were a tad corroded. once i cleaned them, power came back and everything was good again.

    intermitent power steering stiffness

might just be air in the sysyem and needs bled. if you had the pump off to exchange it or diconnected lines to tweak the gearbox you would have introduced air in there. bleeding the system is easy but the air can hide out in tight places making it a little tedious to get it all out. i just...

    very shaky

this is just a guess but if your lift kit came with degree wedges for the pinion angle on the rear leafs, make sure they're still in place. i've had them corrode and fall out resulting in major vibration due to the pinion angle dropping. hth.

    timing chain slapping?

mystery solved and thanks to everyone for all the advice. turns out Bahacalal was right on the money. after further searching into the dark abyss around the fan shroud, i saw that one of the tabs in the bottom of the shroud was not in its slot allowing movement. must have been overlooked at...

    timing chain slapping?

wow, thanks for all the quick responses. i'll have to check deeper into the motor mounts. which one would be more suspect, drivers side or passenger? wouldn't torque influence engine movement more one way than the other? i'm thinking the engine would tend to push on one and lift on the...

    timing chain slapping?

2000 cherokee, 4.0L, AW4, 242TC, 89,000 miles: i've been searching but haven't found anything exactly like what i'm experiencing. when i take off from a standstill, especially with with a payload, i get a grinding or rattling noise coming from in front of the engine, definitely not the TC. it...
