Strange Overheating Issue

Have you spoke with the seller/builder, he could be a great asset?

It has always worked well in Colorado. He said it use to get on the trail (but never overheated) so he went to an all aluminium radiator, but it kept getting busted on the trail so he switched it out to the current copper unit. He also had three electric fans hooked up at one time in place of the stock setup. He said that it worked no better and sent it back. He was very anal so pretty much everything mechanical is in perfect condition.

Where would you have to go to make this issue show? I don't work(disabled) and have a scanner that reads data live(no logging) but willing to try and help!

Wow, that's a pretty great offer.

It does it every time on the way to Payson. Since doing the fan clutch is has disappeared in town, but still did it last weekend when trying to go to Payson. I took the Beeline from Mesa and didn't even make it to Shea Blvd before it overheated.

I don't know the seller/builder, so this is not to besmirch them- but in my experience anything a PO tells you is likely to be highly imaginative.

I trip like that would have to be planned out well in advance. In the mean time I'm at I-17/Bell and would be glad to spend some time on some short testing.

A couple other things to think about, there have been some reports about the same issue with the 3 core CSF radiators. I also might suggest a Hesco water pump as a possible cure, they're not cheap but well worth the price in their function. I was having some "creeping/varying" temps that the Hesco pump made go away completely!

I was thinking something similar! If he was so anal about things, why the gutted cat? What was he trying to cure?

Further, after all the effort to do a custom build- why get rid of it?

I keep hearing about these pumps- what do they cost?

The previous owner had a bunch of custom Jeeps and just finished a custom JK build. His wife reportedly forced the sale. I don't have any issues with him. He has been honest with me.

Sounds great. I have to work all this weekend, but maybe next week?

Sounds like a good egg, then.

Whipped, but a good egg.

Sorry, any woman that "forces the sale" needs to be reminded who wears the pants in the family. IMHO

I think he had four other Jeeps, all built to the hilt, Dynatrac axles, etc.. I think he has a handle on things...

RCP Phx suggested that I change out my tiny, standalone, automatic transmission cooler after visting with him yesterday.

So on the way home I stopped by Lopers and picked up B&M Part #70274

http://www.jegs.com/i/B-M/130/70274/10002/-1

It is almost a perfect fit for an XJ, very tight fit, but it fits. I was able to drive up the mountain without overheating. I am still going to change out some other stuff, but the swapping the little transmission cooler seemed to help a lot.

For some reason I thought you were running two externals. That would do it.

After doing a visual inspection, it was only a 4pass tube/fin cooler on the drivers side. After a test drive it was near 240* (using my scanner)on flat land. With the heat a AW-4 puts out I recommended a larger plate/fin cooler and to relocate it in front of the mechanical fan for constant/more air flow! There were a few more items to look at, the cat and rear o2 showed a "not ready" status and also a slightly lean condition.

I tried to order the new Mishimoto radiator but they told me it was going to be mid-to-late October before I could get it. It looks like I am going the Griffon 5-70095 as I am tired of chasing my tail on this.

For those that have the Griffon please READ THIS REVIEW.

Can I use the Griffon with the stock shrouds and fans?

What is the best place to order the Griffon from? I found it cheapest here, but Jegs will match the price.

Thanks!
