Renix, pre-91 era XJ jeep tech differences

Ecomike - thanks for that reference! Its been a few years for me, but there was another site that was really informative from a guy who was in the middle east. Do you or old_man remember or have that site?

I use to have it in favorites but with all the OS updates, I lost it.

Was it MadXJ?

NO, not the Middle east, but another great one, MadXJ, that has been around a long time with great info.

I'm thinking DrDyno. He is still around here every so often.

Was he in Australia then? I think the site is gone now.

I see that, sorry to hear that, it was a great site. May be time to print and save sites on pdfs in our computers ( I already started on my new one, may have lost stuff I saved 6-8 years ago on older hardware). Have not seen much of 5-90 either, and he was one of the key sources of the hardest to find Renix info, and he ran the Yahoo board, but I gave up on Yahoo BS about 6 years ago. I hope Naxja outlasts me, I have a ton of notes stored here as posts and threads.

Speaking of old timers, I nearly kicked the bucket in 2014, but I had a hard time finding the bucket, just lucky I guess :D, but I can barely use a screw driver now due to the muscle loss and joint damage. We ain't gettin any younger, neither are our jeeps

Differences in front turn signal lights between 4 head light wagoneers (Briarwoods?) and the 2 head light cherokees is something I discovered today. Only took me about 11 years to notice it.

The Cherokees have the turn light assy below the single head lamps, and the side amber lights are not turn signals, just running lights, which I still find odd and a bit of a safety issue.

The Wagoneers do not have the lower turn light assy at all under the head lights. The side amber running lights on the Wagonners are also the turn signals!!!! Different bulb as well it seems. I will be digging into this more. Was doing a pre-safety inspection to day for getting the window stickers and ran into this when the two turn signals on the front were not working and I had the two front ends side by side I suddenly noticed the difference. I think the twin filament bulbs on the cherokee are bad on the blinker filaments. Not sure how the mini bulbs on the Wagonner handle the dual filament, or mini bulb size issue compared to the much larger Cherokee turn signal bulbs.

I think all 91+ xj's have the marker/turn signals. I noticed yesterday after reading your post that my 87's side markers do not blink. I did some searching and it looks like an easy mod though:
http://www.icebear.no/jeep/Turn Signal Rewiring.htm
I'll be giving that a shot tomorrow after work.

Thanks for all your awesome renix info EcoMike and Cruiser54!

So in 91 they got rid of the turn signal light box under the head lights, or they made both flash on turn signals? Thanks for the details.

Both flash on 91+ xj's, I'm pretty sure and I thought I read that in one of cruiser54's earlier posts. I know my buddy's 93 xj flashes on both and my 87 didn't.

Been working on my old 2.8 XJ today. I need to find a pigtail for the blower motor, does anybody make a plug for the blower motor side. the new 1986 harness has a good plug (good everything really) so I'd rather not cut it up like the old harness was. Looking online new motors do not appear to come with a plug.

Other part I'm looking for is a plug from the distributor ignition module to the ignition coil. The one I have was patched long before I bought the jeep, I have found pigtails but thought the complete wire from plug to plug ought to be available somewhere since it's such a common gm 2.8 engine.
I've got a rebuilt distributor with a newer style pick up wires, the old 2.8 uses vacuum advance and only has two wires going from module to coil, later models have four wires or more plus wires to coil.
I'd appreciate a clue to what the proper name is and who might have made them aftermarket.

This is what the ignition coil plug looks like: (it's the brown and pink wires.)

Most of the Renix era connectors are GM Weatherpacks

I stocked up on the connector parts kits for pennies off of Ebay.

That is not a GM weatherpack but it might be a Delphi metripack or similar.

Fun fact: GM's Packard Electrical Division made most of their connectors. It was spun off to become Delphi (an electrical connector maker whose products are sold on digikey, mouser, etc) and many of their molds still have the PED makers mark in them, so if you see PED molded into a connector it is almost certainly a Delphi/GM product of some sort. Some of the datasheets on their site are scanned-in original hand drawn mechanical artwork with dates and engineer signatures going back into the 40s! Many gearheads call all waterproof connectors weatherpacks, but there are dozens or even hundreds of series and only one or two are actually called weatherpacks. Most 80s and 90s vehicles have at least a few dozen Delphi MetriPacks in them, both sealed and unsealed varieties.
