New build: Tealie

Here's a write-up on it but I can't find the product itself: http://www.stu-offroad.com/recovery/twc/twc-1.htm

Can't find the business any more, very cool idea though.

I just placed an order with Prime 4x4 for their coin tray (ash tray, whatever) switch panel. My plan is to mount the on/off and in/out switches there, since I don't have any fancy ass lights or anything. Then I will steal Byron's idea and put the 5-pin socket in the front of the console as well.

The synthetic rope purchase is waiting on me to not be such a cheap ass.

Beer goggles posted a pretty cheap place to buy rope not to long ago. PM him.

I say go 100' with the rope. All the weight savings is still there and you won't have to worry about digging for/forgetting the extensions.

Got rope, got a fairlead, got them installed. I have all the pieces to do the in-cab remote, I'm just lazy.

I'm considering putting a kill switch between the battery and the solenoid pack. Does anyone else do this, and if so, what kind of kill switch?

I'm not sure I can find one heavy duty enough to handle the winch, without it costing me a fortune. I will be running the 4-solenoid, 5-wire setup so there is some fault tolerance; if a solenoid sticks then the winch will still shut off. This would just be an extra layer of safety, but if I'm burning up a kill switch every time I use the winch then I will say screw it.

I had a shut off between my battery and everything, bought it at HF, cheap, but it worked.

I bought another switch that was marine rated that I never installed, which has since been traded for some strobes.

That is awesome news, I just didn't want something that would melt if it was under a heavy load. Plus it's an excuse to visit HF :D

Finally working on this thing again today. Doing some winch wiring and then packing toolboxes and parts and all that.

I seem to have lost the clevis pin for my winch hook. I was going to use a 1/2" grade 8 bolt and distortion nut instead. Is there any reason not to do this? I looked at TSC for another clevis pin but they are not graded or rated for a specific load which makes me nervous. And it seems overkill to buy a whole new hook just for the pin.

Made a few minor changes lately. Swapped some new seats in and put in some harnesses I had out in the shed. Also I tore out the back seat and made a bracket to mount one of the old front seats back there:

My friend Tyler ends up stuck back there a lot, and it seems kind of cruel to put a guy as tall as I am in a bench seat with just a lap belt. This way I was able to add some leg room and it's way easier to get in and out now. For the time being I'm using the 3-point seatbelt but once I figure out a good way to anchor them I will look at putting a legit harness back there as well.

Plus this lets me stand my spare up on end and gives me some extra room if I ever move to bigger tires:

Otherwise I still have one major project left to tackle. My long arms are bound up like all hell and they squeak like two mice banging, and I have wanted a 3-link for a while. I've been putting off this project until Hobag did the hard part and made a 3-link kit, and he came through. He also came through with a set of rod end kits for me:

I bought an extra set of 3/4" ends to make a new track bar, which should take all of the remaining slop out of my steering and make this thing a pleasure to drive on the road. I've only put about 50 road miles on it since I lifted it, and it's not awful but still not as nice as I'd like it to be. I found a set of Prothane coil inserts in the shed too, so I'll put those on while I'm at it, in case I feel the need to jump it. :eyes:

I will still have to get the frame brackets and tube in the next few weeks, but the plan is to tackle this between Redbird and the Crawl, and sell the existing TnT kit and get some of my money back.

This is kind of what I want to do with my back seat. My boys are 15 now and just one back there is uncomfortable IMHO! I'd love to see some detail on how you did this and pictures of someone sitting in it. How close is the top of the head to the roof?

Like the back seat mod.

Only suggestion for the back seat is arm rests!

mac 'maybe a cupholder :)' gyvr

I like the seat in the rear, I tought about putting both my front seats back there. I am also thinking about only putting one in the middle.

Sure, I'll get a closer pic of it tonight. I had a spare C-channel winch plate in the scrap metal pile that was 7.5" wide, just the height I needed for the front of the seat. I set it up on end and put two 1/2" bolts through it and the floor, and two more through it and the seat. The rear mount was a little tougher, I marked the holes and drilled through and the first hole came out just in front of the shock crossmember, so I put a 1/2" bolt there. The second came out inside the frame rail  so I drilled it small and put a lag bolt through it. Not ideal at all but with three other 1/2" bolts holding it I am not too worried. If that corner comes free I will take some flat stock and bolt that through the floor and then bolt the seat to that.

I am 6'3" and with the seat reclined like that I have a few inches of headroom. I hope it's not too tall, but with the seat forward and sitting in the "valley" where the stock bench seat goes, there was just not enough legroom. So I traded off headroom for legroom and if my buddy has to gangsta lean he can deal with it :)

If I had real fab skills, I think a good option would be welding some box tube between the frame rails underneath the floor, and then cutting out the floor so the back of the seat can sit a few inches lower. Still though for not having much of a plan I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Seat looks good Brad.

Thanks! Sent you a PM back too.

That's funny, when I got the cage the first thing he asked me about was mounting a cupholder to it! The arm rests are a great idea since I have lots of room on the left side, I wanted to put storage there or utilize it somehow anyway so maybe I can figure something out.

My original plan was dead center, I tried it there but I didn't have enough room for the spare on either side and I couldn't lay it down in the back anymore either. So with the tire inside it just worked out nice.

Like most projects I was thinking too much and doing too little, I finally got frustrated and threw some wood blocks and the seat back there and moved it around until it was comfortable.

I like the seat. i thought about mounting two fronts back there with something in the middle to keep the kids hands off each other.

cant wait to see the 3 link.
