Knucklehead's blog

about 2.5" on a stock housing but mine was already ground down a bit so about 1.5".
i still need to turn the ring gear down about 1/2" on the lathe.

Looks nice Tim!
Did you pre-heat the center section and slow cool? If so how/with what?

Also what welder/wire/gas/flux combo did you use to burn it on with?

i cheated & had a friends industrial welding shop weld the plate to the cast center section. they preheated it with a torch to 300* then stick welded it on with 7018 (? i think) rod. they also welded the tubes to the center & straightened out the bend that was in it. i did all the machine work & tig'ed the bottom plate on the diff cover.

i got the lower axle 4 link mounts burned in. still working on the 4 link calculator to determine where to place the front mounts. that shit is confusing. getting ready to order up a set of 42" pitbull rockers to replace the wimpy 39.5 iroks. :skull1:

Saw your rig driving up 5 on Friday Dec 23 towing your XJ

yup, that was us. we spent a few days visiting my aunt in duvall, wa., then went back to visit friends in cottage grove, or., then met with our builder onsite to get the quote finished up to build another 30' x 48' shop building on our property. you can never have enough shop space!
hopefully in 5 years or less i will be retired & living there.

i spent the day welding up the rear truss & upper link mounts. :eeks1:

thanks, it fit great & was a lot cheaper (& w-a-y faster to get) than the ballistic version.

i blew my wad on the visa card today.
i ordered up a set of new tires. they should be here next week, so now i need to dismount the 39.5 iroks & sell them. i am not looking forward to unbolting & rebolting all the bazillion beadlock bolts! :shiver:

advanced adapters called today to say my 4 speed atlas transfer case will start on the production line this week....& beat my poor worn out visa card
within inches of its life.

i still need to buy a detroit for the 14 bolt, cromo front axles, & 35 spline hub slugs.

i whipped out the sawzall tonight & cut out the quarter panels to clear the new tires & while i was at it i also cutout the panel under the radiator so i can mount the new warn 9500 lb winch behind the bumper.
then i removed the sliders & sawzalled the rockers off.
i like how it looks so i think i'll keep cutting & lop off the bottom of the doors so i can boatside this beast. then i'll put the sawzall away. the roof is safe...for now anyway!

Is it gonna be all done for show and tell/meet and greet so we can oogle over it or you still going to be on the first bead lock by then?

that brings up a good point, maybe we can have a beadlock bolt race at the party. we can set them up & start the clock, the winner gets a slice of cake! :roflmao:

i finished slicing & dicing the rockers & the bottom of the doors tonight.
tomorrow night i'll start working on the 2x6 boatside rockers. what a mess!

got the new donuts today, they are insane! :shiver: massive lugs on them!
atlas called to say they are shipping my 4 speed on thursday.
the rear detroit & front 35 spline cro-mo axles are on the way as well.
i still need to find a deal on a set of 35 spline drive flanges.
the new front cross member is about 1/3 of the way done.
if i get off the net & into the shop i may be able to make some progress tonight. :repair:

Is all this crap gonna make you drive any better, or is it just gonna get worse?
