This may seem like a noob question but I'm still fairly new to the XJ and learning.. how do I know if I have a low pinion or high pinion front D30?

If you have a 98 and it is the factory front housing, high pinion. The driveshaft will be either above or below the center line of the axle tubes. (Low pinion was only 00-01)

If upgrading from 3.55 to 4.11, 4.56, etc are new carriers needed or will those gears fit (Dana 30 and C8.25)?

Sorry I just saw there was a question I didnt notice till today.

With a D30/C8.25
3.55 to 3.73 or higher you will need a new front carrier. Rear has no carrier 'break'.
