Thumbs down 2001 engine rebuild

So I just acquired a second XJ. An 01 automatic 4wd. last registered in 2010, previous owner's title reads 180k miles from 2006 I believe. I was told the oil pump was bad on it. The previous owner started tearing it apart but only got as far as removing the oil pan. It has been sitting in dirt for a while and here's where I'm at.

I removed the engine finally after fighting with the E12 screws. Otherwise everything came out easily. I've only done top end rebuilds before so I would like some help on what to check if this was really a bad oil pump.

I will be getting some pictures of the crank and pistons tonight to show their conditions.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

If you've got it out, I would just do a full rebuild on it. Double check the head and make sure it isn't cracked too.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

The thing has been open to world and need a complete tear down to get all the crud out. No way we can tell anything from a few burred photos.
Might be easier to find a whole motor out of wrecking yard.

Guess you can just clean it up, change the timing chain and oil pump and hope for the best. Make sure to mark every part so it goes back it the same position, facing the same way.
It's been my experience when someone pulls the pan because the "oil pump is shot", it's usually worn bearings causing the drop in pressure.
If it cleans up without finding the bearing journals rusted, Plastiigauge them to see how worn the bearings are.
A 4.0 R&R is so much fun that I'm sure you won't mind having to pull the engine again if something more serious shows up.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

prices for an 00-01 engine castings are a lot higher due to the 0331 head ruining engines and making them scarce.

Yes.

Start by tearing it down and cleaning it. Visual inspection on the bearings and a plastic gauge.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

leaning more towards the rebuild. I will get be removing the head tonight and see if the engine needs any work done. Hopefully it won't need new oversized pistons.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

make sure to check between cylinders 3/4 for a crack on top of head. It causes coolant to get into the oil.

Re: 2001 engine rebuild

I don't see any problem with the head gasket aside from all the gunk, but that thermostat hole looks like something else.

New gasket:

I've been doing some youtube research on cleaning the pistons. Man are they full of buildup!!!

I should be tackling them tonight.
