90 laredo overhead console Q - short circuit

Have a 1990 Xj laredo with the original overhead console. The previous owner put a jumper between the ground wire and a black w/ white stripe wire to get it to work on the compass. The compass works, but the temp readout shows "SC". Im assuming that means short circuit since the two wires were stripped in a section and have a jumper wire on them. The temp sensor is in place behind the front bumper...but I dont know why they would have run a jumper from the ground wire directly into the other wire. Anyone have experience with the console that might be able to help me out? If I remove the jumper, the console doesnt work at all.

I have a 90 Laredo with a working stock OH console. It works so I have never messed with it. Are you just trying to get the temp sensor to work also?
