front diff replacement

Using my four day weekend to replace the front D30, with vacuum disconnect, in my '89 XJ, due to rotting of the spring cup, worn U-joints, etc. My question is can I replace it with any D30 (even a non vac. disconnect) and if I get one with different gears, can I still drive in 2wd? Thanx

Yes, as long as you leave it in 2wd you can have different gears in the front and rear diffs. Pull the front driveshaft just to be sure nothing stupid happens.

You can and should replace it with a non vacuum disconnect.
