Smittybilt 8000

I know there's been some discussion about this winch but I have a couple questions. Excuse the first one if its a bit naive.

1. The solenoid box looks a bit wide. Has anyone successfully mounted this winch in a cradle with handles? Or is the width not even worth worrying about.

2. Has anyone figured out yet why this winch is so cheap? I'm a bit suspitious.

The solenoid casing is pretty big but the actual guts are not that big, I'm thinking of repackaging mine in a watertight box that is smaller.
