What type of axle do I have?

Sorry I have searched, and I have looked at pictures before, but I can't find any now.

I probably would not be able to tell anyway.

Any help is appreciated.

8.25, notice the bcking plate hanging below the differential cover. Im really suprised you didnt find the axle ID chart that has been posted a million times, not enough of a thorough search i guess.

And being a 96, you could have either the 27-spline or 29-spline 8.25. More than likely, the 27-spline.

Early D35s (through about 91) had a metal plug, later ones were rubber.

Yup, the change corresponded with the switch to c-clips. The hole is high up on the rubber butt-plug version since the gear oil lubes the wheel bearings, so yuo can't just swap over the cover with the metal plug. I hate the rubber plug as they always weep oil.
