I have a 1990 Renix with 4.0 and auto tranny. Will closing off EGR valve port with a metal plate lower my MPG? Something I definitely don't want to do these days.

it should not alter your mileage-- unless you begin to hear knocking after it it blocked (no likely on a well tuned engine). If you begin to hear knocking/pinging, your knock sensor will retard the timing to help alleviate the detonation and KILL your performance and mileage.
