I happened to score a xj d44 housing in pristine condition with no shafts for 80 bucks

As Cal said, you need to change retainer plates to XJ D44.
The TJ retainer is a different bolt pattern, and has a lip you don't want.

Use it as the base for a build. Order up some alloy shafts, prefered locker and gears. Did you get brakes with it?
