I’ve been noticing lately while working on the jeep or anything for that matter I’m looking in the toolbox a carry in the jeep, it’s getting bigger and bigger. In an effort to reduce weight I’m thinking it’s time to start carring less tools, what does everyone think should be in their wheeling tool box?

Only the things you need. Only carry tools for the spare parts you have with. Anything else is a waste. I keep a nice socket set and some wrenches in there at all times. When i go wheeling i had the special tools i need for changing out joints and shafts etc. There was a list around here somewhere. Search for recovery i think and you will find a list of what some people carry. Again only carry the toold you need for parts you brings. Dont bring a c-clamp if you dont have new joints. But again, if you dont have spare shafts a c-clamp or a small hammer are good if you break an inner shaft or joint. You can just pull the inner. Only bring what you need.

that depends - what are you carrying?

I have too much tools for what I do, but I dont carry a spare tire anymore - so I figure that offsets it enough for what I want to do.

I only have 1 set of tools - my tools, so they all come wheeling, or they all stay on the tow rig trailer, or whatever...

CO2, tire plug kit, welding rod, D44 spindle nut socket, 1/2" ratchet, 3/16" Allen head, snap ring pliers, vicegrips, crescent wrench, 3lb sledge, dead blow, 1/2" combonation wrench, and a couppla screwdrivers are the bare minimum I take...

This weekend you will have a set of sockets, a set of box wrenches, a claw hammer, a pickle fork, an adjustable wrench, screwdriver handle with changeable tips, a box of electrical miscellaneous, a box of mechanical miscellaneous, and hopefully some self restraint.

Morning coffee time. :confused1

 too many tools & your toolbox can become a lethal projectile. the worthless factory tiedowns in the back of my sons rig just pulled out of the floor when he had his 85lb toolbox tied down to them and the friggin noise of too many tools ratteling in a box drives me nuts off road. Good sugestion on the pickle fork-never thought of it, removing a broken tie rod can be a pita with the hammer method.I think a good pair of curved jaw vice grips & a 12" crescent wrench are essential also.

A duck tape.

A hammer.

WD40.

If it moves and it shouldnt, tape it.

If it doesnt move and it should, hammer it.

If it makes noise, WD40 it.

If none of those work, its probably an electrical problem.

That is truely impressive -- Both that you're that equipped, and that you took the time to document it all.

In the morning, I'm loading up for HnH this weekend, and I'm going to use your list as much as I can.

But I gotta ask: How much do you figure all that weighs?

About 250#, the box itself is around 50#. The RE springs are dying so she will get custom made Alcans next spring. If I had a tow rig and trailer i wouldn't have to carry all of this stuff, but gas prices killed that idea real quick.

I carry:

High Lift and piece of steel for weight distribution
137 piece craftsman tool set
Sleeping Bag
Mini Mag lite
Hatchet
Machete
Spare fluids - Oil, Gear Lube, Brake fluid, coolant, powersteering fluid
12v Air compressor and 5gallon air tank
Tire repair kit
Spare shafts
Electrical kit - Stripper/crimpers, various wire and connectors
Multi-Meter
Spare CPS
U-joints - Driveshaft and axleshaft
Gallon of water
TP
3 recovery straps 2"x20 2 - 3"x30
Tree saver
Spare Tire
Jumper Cables
Spare Starter
Spare Alternator
Power invertor

I think thats it but I could probably find more if I looked. I usually go on 2-3 days camping/wheeling adventures which is why I carry so many spare parts.

Any one think d35 spare axles is smart to bring? going to the con on the 4th last time i made it through fine but paranoid the whole way

i know, i just had to throw it out there.

IMO a good, and I mean good socket set with all the alan keys and wrenches inside, and a BFH is all you need.

Spare shafts, drive shafts, and other parts are a good idea as well.
