31's with 3.55's/3.07's

i had 31" tires with my old speed xj that had 3.07 gears. now i have an automatic with 3.55 gears. if i put 31's on theis new one will it have more power/better gas mileage that the 5speed with the 3.07 gears did?

probably not. the final drive ratio is about the same. the 3.55 gears are due to the overall numerically lower ratios in the aw4 vs the ax15's numerically higher ratios (except for 5th... it's an OD).

Not trying to hijack the original thread, but on the same topic... If someone had a 5speed with 3.07's, would there be a benefit to swapping out axles to 3.55's with 31's?

yeah, but you can get complete axles with 3.55's out of a junker for cheap and it's way less work and it's common.

Same goes for 4:10s. You'll just have to look harder.

Did any of the XJs with Chrysler 8.25" rears come with 4.10s?
