Gas gauge wont work

recently my gas gauge stopped working, for about a week it was real eratic all over the place now it is pegged on empty. I think that the float may have broken. Gonna pull the pump tomorrow anyone have a cheap fix for a float? or other ideas on why it stopped working. TIA for your help. this is on a 91 XJ

The float tells the sending unit what to tell the fuel guage. Connected to pump. On a 91, i'd go ahead and put a new pump assembly in, and keep it as a spare.

Cheap fix and possibly not the float. Check your grounds by the tank and pump. Not just look at them. Remove and clean the surfaces of the grounds.
