View Full Version : Where does everyone stay?

Looking at a ton of places on websites to make potential reservations.
Where does the group hang out? Are all the hotels located so that if you stay at one and a bunch of people are at another it's still relatively convienent?
What about trail access?
This will likely be my only trip to Moab until I retire in 10 years and I've never been.

Trail access is simple, and we'll have organized runs every day. The trails are all relatively close to town, in all directions.
We will headquarter at Slickrock Campground, where we go every year. It's showing it's age somewhat facility wise, but the trees are huge and there are ton's of them. Some folks will stay at other campgrounds/RV parks because some are nicer, but none are large enough for our group or will tolerate our noise, and Slickrock has plenty of room to group together visiting.
As far as motels, you'll just have to choose one, or see where others are staying. You might look up a map of Moab to see the layout, and see what's close. The RV parks are generally on the north end of town, so you could get a motel in that area to be close for hanging out.

The new owner of the Moab Inca Inn (Markus Heimgartner) is a Swiss Jeeper. He and his family are moving to Moab in the new year and he said that he would work out a deal for us once he has settled in. He only has 22 rooms but doesn't mind his parking lot being used for repairs presumably as long as all the guests are NAXJA. I will see him again in December before he moves and will discuss it further.

I plan on staying at Slickrock the next time around. I doubt the wife n kid will come. The recent Moab FF, we rented a brand spankin new townhome which was nice and was barely a few dollars more per night than the Bowen motel. Unfortunately it was about 5 miles south of town but fortunately, it was close to the SteelBender roundup. :)

That's where I was looking, but had no idea about the good/bad associated with any of those places.
Now that I know where the campground is, I can plan accordingly. My wife has made it very clear that we won't be camping.
She's letting me drive 33 hours across the country to go wheeling, so she gets what she wants.

Well if the place Vince doesn't work out I can tell you that all the big name brand hotels are ok in town...if you got the money. Most of them are on the plus side of 100 a night now.

Most of them are right around 60 or 70 a night with the government rate.
At the very least, we'll end up in one of Slickrock's cabins, 10% off gets me to $36 a night.

If you want a motel close to Slickrock camp, the Holiday Inn Express and the Arches Inn are the closest. I have stayed at both. The Holiday Inn was the nicer of the two but both were comfortable.
See you there.

Me too. but since I don't I'm staying in $265 per night, 3 bedroom, 2ba, 2 car garage luxury condo next to the community center and pool. The luxury of the condo is because the wife is coming, and maybe my Dad also. If it was just Mary (RightSeatSis) and myself we would stay at the campground.
I've done all three, Slickrock in RV, bestwestern and Condo. Slickrock is convient, best western nice, condo's pool keeps the bride happy. She won't trail ride.

Lets say I was going to tow a small pop up camper out (behind my car trailer with the wheeling rig on it), can someone refresh my memory about sites at Slickrock? I was there once back in '99 I believe and was none too impressed with the little tent sites with the little shade cover right next to each other. I can't remember what the other sites were like but I know my pop up wouldn't fit under the little tent awning. :) If I'm going to pay $20 plus per night, I certainly would like a scenic spot with plenty of room. Any suggestions? I'm actually considering one of the public campgrounds in the area, but I don't think anything is very close to the headquarters at Slickrock. I'm open to suggestions. Also, what can one expect for weather at this time of the year? I don't handle HEAT all that well. :) Jeff

I've always stayed at Canyonlands RV Park. I love all the shade and the central location to everything. Also, we've never had to lock anything up and worry about security.
But last fall they really butchered their trees, so I'm not sure about the shade now.
I was impressed by that first campground after you cross the river entering into Moab from the North. I wrote down the name but lost it. My senility won't let me recall. Does anybody know the name of that one? It has GREAT shade and the campground is relatively new.

As my wife is a corporate VP and travels on business a lot, I get to stay in some really nice hotels now and then. I know. I just thought it was funny that you picked up on that as most of my friends in Europe know that I can fall asleep just about anywhere and I'm not that fussy where anywhere is.
I did recently pass up sleeping underneath Rachel's Wrangler at a truck stop in Belgium. Instead, I slept for two hours on the luggage, Jeep parts and recovery kit in the back. In hindsight, sleeping underneath the Jeep would have been more comfortable even though it was raining. Definitely going to take an airbed with me next time I drive it from England to Switzerland. I don't like sleeping on cold wet ground.

if you go to the SLCG web site they have a map.. they will reserve a specific site if you request it, or to be next to a specific person, unless its already asked for specifically. i was right next to Randy in 126 that week and its way in the back and not much unnessecary traffic. not too bad if you can sleep thru your neighbor's gas-powered blender..

Anyone active duty military? Park Creek Campground is free for military and their family.
http://www.packcreekcampground.com/pricing.html
"Effective until US troops come home, all active military and their immediate families may stay at Pack Creek Campground at no charge. You're paying your cost of admission by serving! A unit patch would be appreciated"
They are a little bit away from Slick Rock but it could be worth it for some. I have not talked them about a place to park a trailer for your rig so do not know if they have anything. I was hoping to check it out last Friday but I was with TRNDRVR and Remi in a trip that has been talked about in the Intermountain Chapter. A four hour trip that eneded up being 10 hours. Still had a great time even though I was riding bitch.

Who cares if its a little ways away...thats a heck of a good deal!
And good for them for being so generous. Maybe it will bring some paying business their way too.

I just talked to them to see if they would have a spot for my trailer and was told yes. It would be cool if his support for the military brought him some other business.
You all may see me down there as a guest. I can't seem to get away from you XJ guys. It doesn't help that my neighbor is TRNDRVR. He won't be going though. We are doing the Rubicon right before then.

Hummm, not even Wednesday! He must have an excuse, probably the Rubicon again :dunno: (I know he really just doesn't like seing my rig in his rear view mirror down there :shhh: )

He has to save his last couple of days off for Johnson Valley in November. I am trying to get leave for the Rubicon in September, come back for one week and go to Moab then go to JV in November. It will be tough but with a totally redone rig (still in shop) I should be ready for it.

I've got reservations at Slickrock, Wed thru Sat. Tent site for 3 nights, cabin for 1 night. This is my 1st trip to Moab. After reading this thread, I'm thinking about getting something a little more "comfortable" then sleeping in the heap and putting all my gear in the tent.

You've got a great spot. Stayed there on all of my trips to FallFest (and if I was camping on this trip I would have snagged it again months ago). Back in the corner, plenty of room since there's no site to your south. Under the trees keeps things from getting too hot during the day. Close to the never ending circus in front of the cabins, but just far enough back to get some rest when you need it.
It served as the official HQ for the North Atlantic Chapter on those trips so it's good to see it occupied by a resident of Europe (which we've always considered to be unofficially a part of NAC! :D)
Enjoy!

what is the legality of beer kegs in Utah? my buddy thats coming with me is an assistant brewmaster at our local joint.. :viking:

I am pretty sure that beer kegs are not legal here in Utah. They have not legalized adulthood yet. I would bring it anyway just keep it in the cabin. You would be taking advice from someone that bootlegs beer into the state because the beer here sucks.

How much good beer can I bring in before being considered a smuggler and facing huge fines?

Not sure on how much. I have brought in more then 10 cases at a time but never got pulled over. I can atleast get some ok beer on base to so that helps to keep me sane.

Remember that this is an open forum.
I realize that this is an open forum. I also realize that Utah liquor laws are ridiculous. I admit to being a horrible person and brewing my own beer and yes even boot legging in the year 2008.
Now here is a good answer to IslandOffRoad’s question. From the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control:
"MAY I BRING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES INTO UTAH ?
No. Under Utah law "alcoholic beverages" include all hard liquor, spirits, wine and beer. Beer and other malt beverage products that exceed 3.2% alcohol by weight or 4.0% by volume are considered "liquor", and beer with an alcohol content of 3.2% or less is defined as "beer".
Utah is a control state, and only the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (DABC) may lawfully have liquor products imported and shipped into Utah. Private individuals may not lawfully import or transport them into the state. Manufacturers and suppliers of these products may only supply them to the DABC. Only the DABC through its state liquor stores, package agencies, licensees and permittees may sell liquor products in Utah. Possession of liquor products not purchased from the DABC is strictly prohibited. Also, licensed restaurants and private clubs cannot allow patrons to bring wines onto the premises if they were not purchased in Utah. Other Utah laws prohibit the unlawful importation of beer products into Utah.
There are very few exceptions to these laws. A person coming from a foreign country who clears U.S. customs in Utah may possess, for personal consumption, two liter bottles of liquor purchased outside of Utah. Also, a person who moves his permanent residence to Utah or maintains separate residences both in and out of Utah, may possess for personal consumption, and not for sale or resale, liquor purchased outside of Utah. However, the person must first obtain DABC approval prior to moving to Utah; and upon the arrival of the product, the DABC will affix the Utah label to the liquor for an administrative handling fee. A person may not obtain approval from the DABC under this exception more than once. A person may possess for personal consumption, and not for sale or resale, liquor inherited as part of an estate that is located outside the state and brought it into Utah, after obtaining the approval from the DABC and paying the required administrative handling fee.
Finally, accredited foreign diplomatic missions that establish a mission presence in Utah may ship, possess and purchase alcoholic beverages under certain exceptions granted under the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations. For more information, click here.
Unless one of these exceptions applies, it is clear you may not bring alcoholic beverages into Utah for any purpose whether it be for personal consumption, to serve at your hospitality house or at a private social function, or to give or sell to others."
That is not the answer you wanted I am sure because it does not allow any beer to be brought in. I have served my country for close to 20 years and if the worse thing I do is bring in beer that is over 3.2% for my own consumption I am doing better then most.

I can just see the cops and fireguys showing up again only to find another cabin on fire chuck full of out of state beer kegs.
