Can't speak to what causes failures, but maybe I can set your mind at ease a little - my '92 with 223K miles has all its power windows still working.

Mine still work (1988 XJ Limited). Had to change out the driver side motor a while back. One of the wires broke off inside the motor, so I couldnt solder it back. The only problem I have now is old wiring going to my window regulators, So they dont go up or down as fast as they used to. Thats an easy fix though.
