fyi... check codes on late-model XJs

I've read a bunch of posts here that you can't check the codes on late-model XJs without an OBDII scanner. I bought one a few months ago, but a guy at work just showed me that if you turn the key from Off to On three times in a row WHILE holding in the trip reset button, it'll run through its test procedures and show any codes in the odometer readout. I guess perhaps older XJs didn't need to have the trip reset button pressed.

All the key-clicky trick does on late model XJ's is merely run a diagnotic on the gauge cluster, albeit the caveat that it will work on early production run '97's. Later '97 models and up, you need an OBDII scanner...

It won't spit out any other codes for you.....
