33X10.5X15 vs. 285/75R16 vs. 255/85R16

I love the search utility. It's been very helpful for the last year or so, but I'm gonna have to ask this question.

We know that a 33X10.5X15 will fit in the back laying down, but it's close. There's supposedly some wiggle room. (BFG MT = 32.8" tall & 10.5" wide)

I'd like to go to a 16" rim to get a little heavier duty sidewall (8ply vs 6ply) and 4.5" backspace alloy wheels are much easier/cheaper to find in that size.

The two nearest tires to a 33" in a 16 are: 285/75/R16 (BFG MT 33.1" tall & 11.3" wide) and 255/85R16 (BFG MT 33.3"tall & 10"wide). Does anyone have any experience mounting these inside?

Laying down, custom mount pictures while retaining the back seats. Doesn't really matter.

This is also my duck hunting rig so I can't go out back because I'd have to unhook the boat to get to my deeks and such. Back problems, age and smaller fella, so ontop is out.

Let me know if anyone has experience with or ideas on how to make it happen. I'm thinking a 255/85R16 is my best choice, but I'd really prefer the much more common size of 285/75R16.

I have never tried laying it down but a 285/75R16 will stand up as long as the rear seat is folded.

That looks pretty sweet.

Unfortunately, I need the back seat up.

Man...
A two door and a 5 speed. I'm jealous.

I can just fit a worn 33x12.5R15 behind the seat laying down.
If I get a matching 285/75R16 matching spare it will be close. Has anyone fit a 285 laying down or standing up behind the seat?

Rigidco is now in the process of coming up with a split tire carrier. The binder is in the center or near to it. I'm looking into as well because when hitched to a trailer, I don't have the room for a full swing out. Just a little FYI.

NEW 285x75x16 fits just fine laying down behind my rear seat......

If you don't mind me asking...

What brand tire have you fit?

The tire manufacturers have a pretty diverse calculation of what a 285/75/16 is.

For instance a BFG MT/Wrangler MTR is 33.1X11.3, a Trxus MT/Dunlop Mud Rover is 32.7X11.2 & a Yokahama Geolander is 32.9X11.5.

It's going to be close enough that it could matter.

Now that just looks funny but good job for using your head.... only problem is he will have to have OBA to fill it up.

I have an old school connect to ur battery air pump, now it will prolly take 20 mins to air the tire up with the core out, but none the less, it will air up. I'll be buying the harbor freight or cyclone pump in a couple weeks, it should do MUCH better

co2 much much better! even with a taprite valve about 2 minutes per tire

Thanks for the help

285/75R16 it is!

I never really considered the air downed approach either, but it makes sense.
