The 2001 harness has a 10 pin plug and a 3 pin plug. Leave the 3 pin plug alone. It will fit the 1998.
The pin outs for the 2001 10 pin plug C301:

to remove the pins from the connector, you need to remove a snap piece (looks kind of like teeth) fro the top of the connector. Then you can insert a jeweler's screwdriver (very small slotted) into the end of the connector to remove each pin.
Before you remove ANY pins, note that there are two wires that are WT/BK.
The one at pin 2 is next to the violet wire. Mark it. This one is in a twisted pair with the voilet wire and varies up to 2.5 volts. It is the signal from the computer.
The other one at pin 6 has a constant 12 volts when the key is on. Don't mix these up.
The 1998 has a 3 pin, a 6 pin, and a 8 pin plug.
The harness from my 1998 only had keyless entry. I removed all the pins from the 8 pin plug and the 6 pin plug (note that there are not wires in every hole)

Before you plug anything in, take the harness to the car and make sure you are putting the wires in the right place. The wire colors match the colors in ple plugs on the car end.
Test it out before you put everything back together. If the display does not light up when you turn the key, you mgiht have mixed up the white/black wires. Turn the key off right away if this happens and double check.
