Steering Locking/Binding While Braking

88XJ, 4.0, BA10 w/203K. Interesting experience today while driving the XJ. Twice, while braking just before a turn, my steering momentarily (couple of seconds) locked up preventing me from turning the wheel. I didn't have any kind of noise of vibration when this occurred. Once the steering wheel let go, steering was normal. The binding occurred just on the initial steering application. Understandably, this causes me some concern. The Jeep has not had any suspension work (other than new shocks) or steering work done to it while in my ownership (last 60K miles). Previous (and original) owner stated no accidents with the Jeep. Any ideas what may be casusing this? A quick search leads me to strat thinking steering shaft or box.
