Front Output Spline Count

What is the spline count supposed to be on the FRONT output shaft of an XJ transfercase. Does it depend on whether it has a 231 or 242, and does it change with model year? How about TJ's and YJ's?

My 242 has a 32 spline front output, are 231's the same?

I found a 231 with a 26 spline output (not sure what kind of Jeep it came out of).
