Ignition Switch

I cant get this thing lined up for the life of me. Anybody got any tips?

its either the rod goes in properly, but then i cant get the ignition switch to sit in properly on its brackets

or i line the ignition swich up and then the rod wont fit in because it goes straight up and down and the steering column where the switch sits is on an angle

is there an easier way to do this.

Did you get the wrong switch? Tilt and non-tilt columns use different ign switches. Here's an old thread with some directions and illustrations of the switches.

Are you sure you have the correct part? The switches are different for a tilt or non-tilt steering column. I just picked one up for my '88 and the counter guy showed me both, looks like the mounting is reversed from one to the other.
