'96 NP231, can older ones swap in place?

Hi all,
I am replacing a junk '96 np231 out of an XJ and am wondering if there are any issues with replacing this style with the older 231s as long as they are 23 splines. I know the t-case lost its tail cone in 95 or 96 so my question is, can I just swap the new style rear part from the junk 96 231 on to an older tail cone version and remove the tail cone so I can still use the stock 96 drive shaft?

Thanks,
