Speaker Oddities

For some reason the front left and right rear speakers in my 99 have gone silent. I have the stock CD deck, and swapped back to the basic stock tape deck, but it didn't help. The fader does nothing to fix the problem. I also check the harness to make sure the wires weren't loose or anything.

Any suggestions?

either super coincidental or the chasis side of the harness is bad.

if it is the harness, just hard wire everything. it's not that bad.

I have seen the wires break inside the door (normally where it would go to the factory door mounted tweeters). You can pull the door connector (at A-pillar under boot) and test the wires.

I have a 98 and my front passenger side would not work. The trouble was near the floor where the fuse box is. There is a plug there and the wire was shot from there into the door. I cut the wire above the clip and only had to run a 2ft wire from there to the speaker. Test the speaker @ that clip before running new wire.

basically, the speaker wiring is xj's is just crap............what typically happens is that the wire will get pinched somewhere around/in the door, a lot of times in the rubber accordian between the door and the body

just run new wire to the speaker and through the door into the body, and then splice into the stock wire

I just cut cut mine up near the radio where I knew it was still good and ran a new wire down to the speaker, worked fine 'til the water leaking in (somewhere from the roof) got to the radio and shorted it out....now all I have for a display is " < MPX " no sound.

That looks familiar :D

I just finished dealing with this same problem. Passenger side speaker wire was split in half in the harness between the door and the body. Drivers side wire had split just behind the connector to the speaker. I just spliced mine back together with some extra slack, but it would be just as easy to replace the entire wire.

Is the wiring info constant all the way to the speakers in the door? I have no front speaker sound (sounds pretty common!) and tried to track the wires from the radio to the speaker, but the color seems to change at the inside door harness.

Can anyone shed any light on how to run new wires through the door boot? It's a tight squeeze and I'm not positive how to get a set of new wires patched through.

sticky this please
this is one of like only 3 problems I have had my 99
I hoped it was the head unit or the speakers. both easy to change it was the wires to the speakers. took more time because I didn't ahve the color codes.

I simply probed the wires fo rht correct colors
ruan new wires to teh doors crossed the door jam ( the hardest part) and soldered the wires to the speakers.

no problems since.

my fron left went out intermittnly then the right completely then the left for good.

mine broke in the accordian.... just spliced in at the kick panel, shoved the wire through the boot, spliced in near the speaker, some black tape and zip ties later - done. I used heavier guage and thicker insulation wire. I planned to re-run from the head unit all the way to the speakers, but with stock units and the fact it works fine now... didnt bother.
