I have a 89 cherokee .Got tired of the vac motor sometimes works most of the time not.Replaced diaphran checked vac.Finaly put a spring on the shaft to keep fork in 4 wheel drive.don't know why vac. comes and goes. Are there any downfalls to doing this.

No this won't hurt anything. You could infact swap in a solid shaft out of a non-disco axle and fix the problem in a slightly stronger fashion. If this is a cheapo wheelin' rig you could weld the spider gears and then rig an axle disconect and still be able tomake tight turns with that axle.

just a heads up if you decide to put in a solid shaft you will need to get an inner seal and remove the seal by the vac disco.

what he said

As has been said 1) remove disco 2) block shifter ( I used a hose clamp around the shift rail) 3) install upside down.
Axle is now locked in. Option: remove all unused vac lines. Done.

Suffer ye no more from embarrassing nontractive axle-itis.
