want to add oil level sensor

All my XJ's have come from the factory with one,its called a "dipstick".

why would you want to go through all that wiring and instalation when, like stated above, a dipstick has worked wonders for the last... what... 80 years maybe? and yes, it would only work when the jeep was off, and you would only get laughed at when you bragged about instaling an "oil levle sensor" on your oil pan.

if your serious, then any new model volkswagon or audi have oil level sensors in them, and they work all the time. the only draw back is they are slow and usually the light comes on a little to late. they are simple 2 wire sensors that need a light in the dash. it would suck to stick that sensor into the pan cause in the end you'd just end up with another place for oil to get out of.

If you want to add something with some real use put in an oil temp gauge and a mechanical oil pressure gauge. The electronic pressure gauge has huge delay where as the mechanical gauge is instant. Oil temp is crutial since its the oil that keeps the moving components in the motor moving and the non moving components not moving. If the oil gets too hot then it looses its lubing properties and bad things happen like a motor rebuild.
