xj idles irraticly and dies sometimes at idle

i have a 1988 jeep xj with the 4.0 liter motor and it will ldle up and down to where it will almost die and other times it will die. when i am driving it will run great and not spit or sputter. it is just at idle or when i come to a stop and push in the clutch it will die once i a while. any ideas would greatly help. thanks aaron

IAC needs cleaning??

EGR Valve. Just replaced on my 89 which was doing exact same thing. First check all the vacuum lines. If they are connected, I found I could disconnect the vacuum line at the EGR valve and it would run fine, but when I hooked up the EGR, it would stall at idle or when braking. If I remember right, my Haynes manual had decent troubleshooting for that.
