Has anyone heard of using an air filter for a honda 300EX ATV to replace the box and the tube on an Xj? I was trying to find the article on the Cherokee America website but no luck!! thanks in advance

No idea what a honda 300ex filter looks like. Never heard of trying to use one either.
There are many people who sell a new tube and cone style filter kit for the cherokee but if you are trying to make one yourself, all you need is some 3" exhaust tube and the cone filter of your choice with a 3" inlet. Plus a couple of holes to connect the other vacume lines.
if you do a search there should be tons of discussions with photos of ideas.
